Description

This intermediate-level course strengthens technical competencies required to deploy, manage, and maintain enterprise GIS environments supporting national broadband mapping systems under the Africa-BB-Maps initiative.

Building on the foundational knowledge acquired in the Basic training, this course focuses on multiuser geodatabase configuration, structured data governance, enterprise workflows, and advanced editing within ArcGIS Pro.

The course covers the following official Esri curriculum components:

  • Deploying and Maintaining a Multiuser Geodatabase
  • Creating and Editing Data with ArcGIS Pro

The training provides structured coverage of:

  • Enterprise GIS architecture and multi-tier environments
  • Multiuser geodatabase configuration and management
  • Data loading, schema administration, and structured update workflows
  • User roles, access control, and privilege management
  • Topology rules and data integrity enforcement
  • Database performance optimisation and maintenance
  • Publishing geospatial services and controlled data sharing

Through guided enterprise-level exercises using broadband-related datasets (e.g., fibre routes, mobile coverage layers, infrastructure locations, administrative boundaries), participants acquire the skills required to operate and sustain national broadband mapping systems in multiuser production environments.

National technical focal points who have completed the Basic training or possess equivalent ArcGIS Pro competencies; GIS administrators; system operators; and technical staff responsible for enterprise GIS operations, data publishing, and maintenance of national broadband mapping systems.

Qualifications or experience needed to participate in this training course:
  • Completion of the Basic training or equivalent ArcGIS Pro experience
  • Practical experience working with GIS datasets
  • Basic understanding of spatial databases
Selection criteria:
  • Active technical role in enterprise GIS or broadband mapping operations
  • Nomination by participating countries
Prerequisites

Participants need to have completed the following self-paced courses:

  1. Introduction to broadband mapping
  2. Advanced broadband mapping

Number of available places per cohort: 20

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain enterprise GIS architecture, including multi-tier system components and multiuser geodatabase structures.
  • Configure and establish connections to a multiuser geodatabase environment.
  • Load, organise, and administer broadband datasets within an enterprise schema.
  • Implement and manage role-based access control mechanisms and user privileges.
  • Apply and validate topology rules to ensure spatial integrity and data consistency.
  • Analyse and optimise database performance using indexing and maintenance procedures.
  • Publish datasets as services in enterprise environments.
  • Design and operationalise structured enterprise GIS workflows supporting sustainable national broadband mapping systems.

Instructor-led sessions combining structured presentations, live system demonstrations, guided hands-on labs, operational simulations, and broadband-focused enterprise case studies.

The methodology emphasises experiential learning, with a minimum of 60% of instructional time dedicated to practical exercises in ArcGIS Pro and enterprise geodatabase environments.

  • Practical labs and operational scenarios: 60%
  • Active participation and attendance: 40%
  • Total: 100%

A total score of 70% or higher is required to obtain the ITU certificate.

Registration information

Unless specified otherwise, all ITU Academy training courses are open to all interested professionals, irrespective of their race, ethnicity, age, gender, religion, economic status and other diverse backgrounds. We strongly encourage registrations from female participants, and participants from developing countries. This includes least developed countries, small island developing states and landlocked developing countries.
