Description

This course provides comprehensive insights into the technical and project management aspects of fiber optics technology, emphasizing its role in supporting smart city initiatives that promote sustainability, efficiency, and innovation. The course aims to empower professionals involved in urban planning, telecommunications and infrastructure development with the necessary skills to scope, initiate, design, implement, and manage fiber optics infrastructure projects tailored for sustainable smart city development in time, within budget, and to the highest quality specifications.

The course employs measurable objectives to ensure that participants not only acquire knowledge but also develop practical skills that can be directly applied to real-world scenarios in fiber optics infrastructure and project management for sustainable smart city development.

The training is aimed at the following professionals:

  • Policymakers and government officials
  • ICT professionals and senior managers
  • ICT/Telecommunications regulators

This course is an advanced course; therefore, it requires intermediate industrial knowledge on Fiber Optics Infrastructure and Smart City Development.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate deep knowledge of smart cities, fiber optics technologies and their application in smart cities development
  • List and describe fiber optic components – switches, amplifiers, multiplexers, drivers, etc.
  • Demonstrate in-depth understanding of fiber cables and associated link loss and power budget computation for smart city development.
  • Describe network design, mapping/planning and the deployment of optical fiber.
  • Explain elements and methodologies of fiber project management including project planning, scheduling and risk management for smart city infrastructure development.
  • Explain and demonstrate knowledge of stakeholder engagement, communication and collaboration in fiber project management for smart cities
  • Describe budgeting and cost control in fiber project management
  • Develop a Project Management Plan document for fiber optic deployment (including Gantt chart) that accurately represents project tasks and timelines.
  • Explain emerging trends, disrupti

The course will run for two weeks. The course delivery method involves the following:

  • Presentations and pre-recorded videos shall be made available through the ITU Academy platform at the beginning of the course to facilitate self-study. Each week is based on two hours of lectures.
  • Weekly discussion Forums based on discussion topics and case studies, with instructor moderation and feedback.
  • Weekly live Q&A session via Zoom platform to answer any questions you may have about the material covered for the week and the assignments. One additional chat session might occur if needed.
  •  Mandatory online quizzes at the end of each week.
  • Two case study submissions.

The live sessions will take place as per the below schedule:

  • Week 1 session: Friday, 12 June 2026 starting from 2 pm CET
  • Week 2 session: Friday, 19 June 2026 starting from 2 pm CET

The participants will be evaluated according to their substantive posts on the discussion forum, active participation in the online sessions, and other course activities. Two quizzes at the end of the two weeks (i.e., week 1 and week 2), and one Individual Assignment to be submitted and graded. Templates outlining the format for the assignment submission will be provided via the ITU Academy platform. Each quiz will be multiple choices questions suitable for evaluation of course participants through the ITU Academy platform.

A total score of 70% and above is required to obtain the ITU course completion certificate, through the following evaluation parameters:

Two quizzes (20% per quiz) : 30%

Individual Assignment : 40%

Two live Sessions : 10%

Two Discussion Forums : 20%

Total Evaluation:
