Description

This comprehensive training program aims to equip participants with in-depth knowledge of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) communication satellites and their diverse applications in the rapidly evolving digital economy. The role of LEO communication satellites has become increasingly pivotal, ushering in a new era in the digital economy. These satellites, orbiting at lower altitudes than their geostationary counterparts, offer many advantages that are reshaping the way we connect, communicate, and conduct business. Their proximity to Earth results in lower latency and enhanced data transfer speeds, making them particularly suitable for applications demanding real-time connectivity. The participants will gain insights into the technical aspects, deployment strategies, and practical applications of LEO satellites in driving digital transformation across various sectors. An integral aspect of the course is the exploration of LEO satellite applications in the digital economy. From providing connectivity solutions in remote areas to supporting Internet of Things (IoT) devices and delivering broadband services, LEO satellites play a pivotal role in fostering economic development and br idging digital divides. The participants will delve into the regulatory and policy frameworks governing satellite communication, including spectrum allocation and licensing. The course also addresses the critical issue of security, exploring measures to safeguard satellite systems from potential threats and cyber-attacks. As technology continues to advance, the course anticipates and analyzes future trends in LEO satellite technology. From next-generation satellites to integration with 5G networks, the participants will gain a forward-looking perspective on the evolving landscape of satellite communication.

The training is aimed at the following professionals

  • Telecommunication Professionals

  • Satellite Engineers and Technicians

  • Policy Makers in Telecommunication and Space Industry

  • IoT Solution Providers

  • Broadband Service Providers

  • Researchers and Academicians in Satellite Communication

  • Entrepreneurs and Innovators in Digital Economy

  • Government Officials Involved in Telecommunication Regulation

This course is an advanced course; therefore, it requires an intermediate industrial knowledge on Communication Satellites.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • explain satellite orbits and their relevance in modern communication.

  • describe the principles of LEO communication satellites.

  • demonstrate an understanding of LEO Satellite constellations, licensing, and regulatory considerations.

  • summarize key characteristics for satellite launch and deployment including system health monitoring and control.

  • describe LEO Satellite Networking and the associated Communication Protocols

  • explain the different applications of LEO satellites in the digital economy, including connectivity solutions, IoT integration, broadband services, etc.

  • describe the regulatory landscape and policy considerations governing LEO satellite deployment.

  • analyze insights into emerging trends, future developments, and the potential impact of LEO satellites on the digital economy.

  • explain practical application, ethical and social implication of LEO satellite in real life scenarios.

.

The course (2 weeks duration) study method involves the following:

  • Course Materials: The relevant course material (Presentations) and pre-recorded video is made available on the ITU Academy learning portal at the beginning of the course to facilitate self-study. Each week is based on 2 hours of lectures-presentations per week.

  • Online Discussion Forums: discussion forums are organized weekly at the ITU Academy based on discussions topics and case studies. Students are highly encouraged to participate and interact with instructors and other students (e.g., forum participation, Moodle messenger, etc.).

  • Chat Sessions: weekly live chat sessions via Zoom platform (2pm CEST) with the students to facilitate questions about the material covered for the week and the assignments.  The dates for the live chat session(s) will be communicated to participants on the first day of the course.

  • Quizzes: One mandatory online quiz (i.e., multiple choice questions) at the end of each week.

  • Assignment. A downloadable Word document Template is provided for submission case study research assignment on the ITU Academy.

The participants will be evaluated according to their substantive posts on the discussion forum, active participation in the online chat sessions, and other course activities, reflecting both the quantity and quality of time spent on the course. Two quizzes at the end of the two weeks (i.e., week 1 and week 2), and one Individual Assignment to be submitted and graded. Templates outlining the format for the assignment submission will be provided via the ITU Academy platform. Each quiz will be multiple choices questions suitable for evaluation of course participants through the ITU Academy platform. The maximum grade for the course will be 100 points. The evaluation details and criteria for earning certificates are as follows.

A total score of 70% and above is required to obtain the ITU course completion certificate, through the following evaluation parameters:

  • Two quizzes (20% per quiz) 40%
