The 2nd round of Steering Committee meetings under the 2015-2018 strategy were held between November 2015 and January 2016.
Under the new strategy, Steering Committees constitute the main governance structure of the Centres of Excellence in each region. Members were chosen from stakeholders of the Centre of Excellence initiative, which include operators, regulators and regional telecommunication bodies. Each region’s Steering Committee includes: representatives of Member States and/or Sector Members from the countries represented by the Centers of Excellence in the region; regional representatives of the Group on Capacity Building Initiatives; representatives from Member States in the region chosen by ITU; and ITU.
Key responsibilities of the Steering Committees include advising ITU on operations of the Centres and providing strategic recommendations; facilitating cooperation between regional Centres; recommending a regional annual training plan; and assisting in promoting the activities of the Centres of Excellence.
The purpose of the Steering Committee meetings was to discuss issues related to the implementation of the new Centres of Excellence strategy, and to enable each region to become familiarized with the processes and procedures for the ongoing functionality of the Centres under the new strategy. The meetings were also designed to assist regions in developing an Action Plan for 2016.
