Satellite technologies have played a significant role in communications for many decades, since they are the only ones that can provide truly global coverage. Their applications in IoT have so far been limited, but recent advances in electronics and antenna technologies have ushered a new era of smaller satellites with improved characteristics, which coupled with improvements in launching vehicles open the door for unforeseen applications, sustainable even in budget constrained sectors.

Internet of Things (IoT) is expected to dominate the telecom market where machines exchange data for intelligent applications. Devices and networks supporting IoT pose unique challenges such as low power, low cost, low mobility, and long battery life. This course addresses several low power wide area (LPWA) network technologies defined by 3GPP to meet these requirements. 3GPP-defined LPWA technology options include LTE-M (or enhanced machine type communication) and Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT). This course provides a foundation for 5G aspects relevant to IoT and NB-LTE and their extensions.

5G advantages in terms of enhanced throughout are at the forefront, but the network slicing capabilities it offers are being leveraged to meet the requirements of both massive and critical IoT applications, in which the number of devices to be served and the duration of their batteries is the most important aspect. Moreover, for certain applications, the 5G reduced latency can be a game changer. In this course we will introduce IoT and its applications, give an introduction to 5G and dive into the use of 5G in IoT. We will also cover the basic principles of spectrum regulation.

This course aims to introduce participants to the concept and pillars of the Internet of Things taking into account the work of ITU in the areas of the smart sustainable city. Participants will be introduced to concepts, goals, and frameworks to key aspects and KPIs of IoT and related technology solutions and services such as Big Data and Blockchain area and some use cases for the smart sustainable city (SSC).
