In December 2024, the Centros Tecnológicos Comunitarios (CTC), the DTC in the Dominican Republic, conducted a basic digital skills training for a group of 50 female prison inmates of the Rafey Rehabilitation and Correctional Center in Santiago de los Caballeros. The training was supported by the project “Boosting digital skills through Digital Transformation Centres”, funded by the Government of Norway and ITU.

The activity aimed to provide the inmates with essential digital skills to facilitate their reintegration into society and to open doors to educational and employment opportunities. For many of these women, life after incarceration represents a daunting challenge, since many of them lack the tools and knowledge to navigate an increasingly digital world.

The training covered various topics ranging from using computers and accessing online resources to navigating job portals and utilizing digital communication tools. These skills are critical for the inmates to access education opportunities, secure employment, and reconnect with society upon their release. In 2025, ITU and the CTC are planning to continue this collaboration by extending a similar programme to the male inmates of the Rafey Rehabilitation and Correctional Center.
