From 22 April to 9 May 2025, the Uganda Institute of Information and Communications Technology (UICT), the DTC in Uganda, conducted its first train-the-trainer programme on computer basics for the visually impaired, with support from ITU and the Government of Norway through the Project “Boosting Digital Skills through Digital Transformation Centres”, as well as ST Foundation. The activity equipped 20 trainers (10 visually impaired and 10 sighted) of which 45 per cent were women, with the foundational knowledge and hands-on competencies needed to effectively deliver the ICBVI course. The training was delivered using a blended, immersive, and highly inclusive approach. It also introduced instructional practices and adaptive teaching strategies for visually impaired learners, emphasizing accessibility and co-learning.

The first two weeks of the programme were dedicated to training an initial cohort of 20 trainers on basic ICT skills tailored for visually impaired learners, while the final week consisted of a master trainer class focusing on advanced ICT applications (including Excel data processing, NVDA enhancement, etc.) for a group of 12 trainers selected from the first phase. This first edition of the train-the-trainer programme will be instrumental in laying the groundwork for the creation of a sustainable and certified national pool of trainers to enable the scalable roll-out of the ICBVI course throughout Uganda.
